This year’s BEVA Congress brings one of its strongest orthopaedics and diagnostic imaging programmes yet, shaped by equine orthopaedic clinician Annamaria Nagy, who specialises in complicated lameness and advanced imaging.
We sat down with her to chat through the programme and pull out her highlights...
Injury prevention in equine athletes
Thursday, 13:40, Hall 5
With this year’s Everyday Welfare theme, injury prevention is a major focus, and in this session it’s not just about racehorses.
“Most sessions on injury prevention are focused on racehorses,” Annamaria says, “but this year we also look at pleasure horses and non‑racing sports horses.”
Chaired by David Stack and sponsored by Hallmarq Veterinary Imaging, this session will provide practical insights into:
Monitoring horses with regular clinical exams
Using imaging proactively
Straightforward ways to keep horses sound for longer
Pre‑Purchase Imaging: How much is too much?
Thursday, 15:55, Hall 10
One of the big sessions this year explores the increasingly complex role of imaging in pre‑purchase examinations.
Chaired by Lucy Grieve this session will dive into questions such as:
Can ultrasound images be reliably interpreted remotely?
When is CT or MRI genuinely justified?
How do you avoid over‑interpreting findings at the point of sale?
Lameness diagnosis: to block or not to block
Friday, 08:40, Hall 1
One of the most anticipated sessions of Congress asks a provocative question: should diagnostic analgesia remain routine?
The session includes Professor Jean‑Marie Denoix, who, for the first time, will openly explain why he does not use diagnostic analgesia in most horses.
This is the session Annamaria is most excited about and with good reason! It promises to spark discussions that will genuinely shape clinical practice so be sure not to miss it.
Lameness and diagnostic imaging case discussion panel
Friday, 11:00, Hall 1
Following on from the lameness diagnosis session is this panel chaired by Annamaria. Bringing together clinicians from ambulatory practice, hospital practice, academia and world-leading diagnostic imaging, this session is also sponsored by Hallmarq Veterinary Imaging.
Together, they’ll walk you through real lameness cases, from clinical exam to gait analysis and advanced imaging, showing exactly how different specialists approach the same challenges.
How does advanced imaging help interpret basic imaging?
Saturday, 13:30, Hall 5
For Annamaria another stand‑out session is this one, looking at how CT and MRI findings can directly improve your routine radiography and ultrasound work, with knowledge you can apply straight away.
“The knowledge we gain from MRI and CT can really be applied in daily practice.”
Presenting in this session herself, Annamaria will be joined by Natasha Werpy, Jonathon Dixon, Filip Vandenberghe and Lucy Meehan-Howard to cover the foot, neck, stifle and more -offering genuinely usable takeaways for your day‑to‑day caseload.
Key takeaways
More than anything, Annamaria hopes you leave Congress feeling more confident in your diagnostic reasoning: “The knowledge can really be applied in daily practice… even when advanced imaging isn’t available.”
