With BEVA Congress 2026 fast approaching, we caught up with Congress Committee member Malcolm Morley to hear what he’s most looking forward to and why these sessions matter for equine vets in practice today.
Malcolm, an equine vet with over 30 years’ experience and currently Director (UK) at World Horse Welfare, brings valuable insight into both clinical work and the realities of running a veterinary business.
Understanding how equine veterinary business really works
One of Malcolm’s standout picks comes right at the start of Congress, with a Thursday morning session in Hall 9 (08:30–09:50) focused on the fundamentals of equine veterinary business in a changing landscape.
The stream explores everything from the business case for equine veterinary nurses, to the impact of the post-CMA landscape, and the financial realities of first opinion practice, before finishing with practical lessons drawn from farm animal systems.
Together, these sessions offer a clear, practical look at how equine practices operate today, and how they may need to adapt for the future.
From challenges to solutions: supporting today’s veterinary teams
Later on Thursday(16:05–17:20), Malcolm highlights a session focused on the realities of employing and supporting veterinary teams.
Rather than simply identifying problems, the session focuses on solutions - from managing and developing team members, to tackling discrimination, improving retention and making flexible working a reality.
“There’s no point making the workforce fit the work — we’ve got to make the work fit the workforce.”
Contextualised care: balancing welfare with real-world practice
On Saturday morning in Hall 9 (10:55–12:15), Malcolm is part of a session exploring contextualised care, a key theme for this year’s Congress.
Bringing together perspectives from clients, clinicians and wellbeing experts, the session looks at how to make the right decision for each individual case, balancing ideal care with real-world constraints.
More than CPD: the power of community
While the programme is packed with practical learning, Malcolm is clear that Congress offers something more.
For him, one of the most valuable aspects is the opportunity to connect, not just with familiar colleagues, but with new people across the profession.
“So much of BEVA Congress is about that sense of community and being part of the equine veterinary profession.”
Don’t miss out
With practical sessions spanning business, workforce challenges and clinical decision-making, BEVA Congress 2026 offers insights you can take straight back to practice, alongside the connections that make it all worthwhile.
