Equine nurses sit at the heart of patient care - advocating for welfare, supporting teams, and ensuring the fundamentals of nursing are never overlooked. At BEVA Congress 2026, the Nurse Stream has been designed to recognise, support and empower that vital role, and it promises to be stronger, broader and more inclusive than ever before.
We recently caught up with Kassie Hill, Nursing Team Leader at Liphook Equine Hospital and Nurse Stream Lead for BEVA Congress 2026, to talk about what delegates can expect - and why this year’s programme is one not to miss.
A nurse stream designed for every stage of your career
One of Kassie’s key motivations in shaping the 2026 Nurse Stream was ensuring it genuinely offers something for everyone.
“I really wanted to create a stream that covers all bases,” she explains. “From newer nurses who are building confidence, to experienced head nurses asking ‘what’s next?’ — everyone should come away with tools they can actually use back in practice.”
Alongside strong clinical content, the programme places real emphasis on professional confidence, communication and advocacy. Sessions have been selected to support nurses not only in what they do, but in how they are heard within their teams — particularly when it comes to patient welfare.
Bringing everyday welfare to life
With Everyday Welfare as the overarching Congress theme, Kassie felt the Nurse Stream aligned naturally.
“Welfare is always at the forefront of nursing,” she says. “It’s what we push for every day, often behind the scenes.”
This year’s programme aims to give nurses practical tools to advocate more effectively for welfare — whether that’s recognising stress in procedures, preventing pain, or feeling confident to speak up when something doesn’t sit right.
Unmissable sessions and speakers
Highlights from the Nurse Stream, many of which Kassie herself is particularly excited about, include:
Taking the stress out of procedures with Jenny Hindmarsh
A practical look at reducing stress for equine patients and creating calmer clinical environments.
Seeing what horses can’t say: The vital role of nurses in equine pain with Ruth Morgan
Supporting nurses to deepen their understanding of pain management and strengthen their role as patient advocates.
Ethics in ambulatory nursing with Cassie Woods
Exploring how nurses can confidently step into ambulatory practice and support busy veterinary teams.
The VN Vision Project - RCVS with Julie Dugmore
A rare opportunity for nurses to engage directly with the future direction of the veterinary and nursing professions.
And this is just part of the story.
A Congress truly open to nurses
One of the most exciting aspects of BEVA Congress 2026 is how deeply nurses are integrated throughout the wider programme.
“There’s so much crossover this year,” Kassie says. “I’d really encourage nurses to look beyond the Nurse Stream — there are sessions across all three days where nurse voices belong and will be welcomed.”
This inclusive approach reflects Imogen Burrows' vision for Congress: bringing the whole profession together and prompting meaningful conversations about welfare, teamwork and best practice.
“Just put your name down”
As someone who has stepped onto the Congress Committee herself, Kassie is keen to encourage others to push past imposter syndrome — a theme echoed throughout this year’s Nurse Stream.
“If someone asks you to step up, say yes,” she says. “You might feel daunted at first, but you belong in these spaces.”
That same message runs through Congress itself: nurses belong here.
